Friday morning, Secretary Mattis approved a request for more U.S. troops to be dispatched to the southern border.
The Defense Secretary is answering calls from President Trump to secure the border as a caravan of Central American migrants approaches.
The Guardian reports the number of caravan migrants could be as high as 7,200.
THE GROUP HAS GROWN STEADILY SINCE SETTING OUT FROM THE HONDURAN CITY OF SAN PEDRO SULA ON 12 OCTOBER, BUT THE EXACT SIZE IS UNCLEAR AS THERE IS NO SINGLE ORGANIZING GROUP.
MEXICO’S INTERIOR MINISTRY PUT THE FIGURE AT 4,500 ON TUESDAY; LOCAL OFFICIALS IN THE TOWN HUIXTLA ESTIMATED THE NUMBER OF PARTICIPANTS AT CLOSER TO 6,000, WHILE UN OFFICIALS SAID THERE WERE 7,200 MIGRANTS.
In addition to the additional U.S. troops heading to the border, Politico is reporting that President Trump is considering signing an executive order to stop the group from entering the United States.
From Fox News
Defense Secretary Jim Mattis has approved a Homeland Security request for more U.S. troops to be dispatched to the southern border, amid concerns and controversy over an approaching migrant caravan currently in Mexico.
The Pentagon is continuing to work through the details, with planning expected through the weekend, officials familiar with the matter told Fox News.
Officials are looking at sending 800 troops, but one official called that estimate “the floor” – saying it could increase as military planners work through the request from DHS to help the Border Patrol.
